Former UCSB Vice Chancellor Takes Over Of Head Of National Laboratory In Bay Area

A UC Santa Barbara Vice Chancellor is starting his new job as head of a prestigious research facility in the Bay Area this week.

Michael Witherell takes over as Director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory tomorrow.

Witherell was UCSB’s Vice Chancellor for Research for more than a decade.  The physicist help increase UCSB research spending from $165, to $227 million dollars a year.

Lawrence Berkeley is part of the national laboratory system, and is managed by the University of California system.  It employs more than 3200 researchers and support staff.
