A fraud ring has been targeting businesses in Santa Barbara County, pushing them to pay for fraudulent fire inspection services.
Officials with six fire departments in the county joined forces to issue a warning about the scam. They say people have been showing up at businesses using high pressure sales tactics, and in some cases claimed to be firefighters, or representatives of fire departments.
Local fire departments don’t use contractors to make inspections, and would never ask for money up front. Firefighters say if you are approached about an inspection, ask for identification, a business card, and a contractor’s license number.
