A deal to deepen a local harbor could mean hundreds of thousands of tons of additional cargo passing through the facility.

The Port of Hueneme has signed a contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to deepen the port’s navigational area from 35 to 40 feet.

The enhancement will mean ships will be able to move heavier load through the Ventura County facility.  It will also be able to handle some cargo ships which were previously too big for the port.

The Port will pay for just over a third of the eight million dollar project, with the Corps of Engineers picking up the balance.
