Vehicular Manslaughter Charge Filed In Connection With Fatal Metrolink Crash In Ventura County

February 24th, 2015 Metrolink Crash In Ventura County Killed One, Left 34 Injured

Ventura County prosecutors say they have filed a vehicular manslaughter charge against the driver of a pickup truck which became stuck on railroad tracks in Oxnard, causing a fatal train collision.

The crash occurred February 24th, 2015 at Rice Avenue and Fifth Street.  Investigators say Jose Alejandro Sanchez-Ramirez turned short of the intersection, and drove a pickup truck towing a trailer onto the tracks, eventually becoming stuck.

His attorney claimed he had become confused.  But, prosecutors say the 55 year old man made no effort to notify authorities about the vehicles becoming stalled on the tracks.

A Metrolink train plowed into the vehicles.  The train’s engineer, Glen William Steele, was fatally injured, and 34 other people were injured.

Prosecutors say because of the large number of agencies investigating the crash, it took nearly a year for the investigation to reach a point where charges could be filed.
