Anti Nuclear Power Group Issues New Call For Shutdown Of Diable Canyon Plant

Posted on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 2:40pm

An anti nuclear power group is making new calls for the immediate shutdown of the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant, in the wake of the release of a secret report by an expert who questioned the facility’s ability to withstand a major earthquake.

Friends Of The Earth filed a petition with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission asking for a hearing on its shutdown request, charging that the plant is violating its operating license.

The NRC, and plant owner PG&E say the facility is safe.

Yesterday, the Associated Press made public a report from a federal nuclear expert which says the plant’s key equipment hasn’t been assessed to see whether it could withstand shaking associated with a major earthquake.

The report doesn’t say there are any existing safety issues with the plant, but that with questions arising during the last few years over earthquake faults near the plant, the shaking potential should be studied.
