Algae Impacting Taste, Smell Of Some Water On Central Coast, But Not Safety

Posted on Friday, August 15, 2014 1:37pm

Some drinking water on the Central Coast may not exactly look, or smell the same this week, because of algae.

The Central Coast Water Authority says some non harmful algae compounds entered the State Water Project water supply.

The City of Santa Maria put out word to its customers it has changed its water blend as a result.

The algae can cause an earthy, or musty taste, and odor in water, but it is perfectly safe to use.

It’s expected the water will return to normal in the next few days.
