Historic Ventura County Railroad Battling Eviction Back In Business, At Least Temporarily

Posted on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 4:25pm

A historic railroad which offers nostalgic rides on vintage trains is back in business, at least temporarily, after a judge put a stay on her earlier eviction order.

The Ventura County Transportation Commission moved to evict the Fillmore & Western Railroad from a county owned rail line, after they couldn’t reach a new contract agreement.

Commission officials said they took the action because income from the privately owned railroad wasn’t enough to cover the track’s upkeep, so taxpayers were in effect subsidizing the business.

The railroad claimed the Commission mismanaged the rail line.

Earlier this month, the judge ruled in favor of part of the Commission’s efforts to evict the railroad, forcing the suspension of the tourist train rides.

Today, the judge stayed the order, allowing the trains to resume running at least until the railroad’s appeal is settled.

Fillmore & Western has resumed selling tickets again, and the trains will begin running again this weekend.
