State Coastal Commission Orders Fence Limiting Access To Central Coast Hiking Trail Removed

Posted on Friday, July 11, 2014 5:09pm

The State Coastal Commission today ordered the owners of a chunk of coastal land on the Central Coast to take down fencing that’s blocked public access to a popular trail.

Meeting in Ventura, commissioners called the fencing on the Avila Beach property at Pirate’s Cove a flagrant violation of the law.

The owners say they fenced the land because of concern about public safety, and offered to establish alternative trails.

The cove has been a popular spot for visitors for decades.

The commission ruled that the fencing amounted to unpermited coastal development.
