New Grand Jury Report Says Ventura County Detention Facilities Are Coping Well With Realignment

Posted on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 12:22am

A new Ventura County Grand Jury report says that the county’s detention system has overall done a good job of dealing with the state’s shift of many low level offenders to local jurisdiction.

The Grand Jury says they didn’t find any major problems at the county’s jails, or the nine holding facilities in the county.

However, they are calling for more training for detention officers, noting that officers may face more serious offenders as a result of the changes, as well as increased stress due to more overcrowding.

The report also suggests a number of maintenance issues at specific facilities, such as buying microwave meals for the Simi Valley, and Port Hueneme jails, so staff doesn’t have to make fast food runs to feed inmates.
