Santa Barbara County Approves Pulling $1 Million Dollars From General Fund To Cover Sheriff’s Department Budget Shortfall

Santa Barbara County Supervisors have allocated an extra million dollars to the county’s Sheriff’s Department, to help cover a major budget shortfall.

The Sheriff’s Department had originally asked for $1.3 million dollars in additional general fund money to help with the shortage, but said it can use $300,000 in federal, and state forfeiture funds to fill part of the gap.

Sheriff Bill Brown says the largest chunk of overtime was the result of new hires not being fully trained yet, forcing the need for overtime to cover shifts.

He also cited overtime from the unsponsored, unsanctioned Isla Vista Halloween event, as well as massive overtime for the Deltopia riot in Isla Vista reasons for the overage.

The department also had some higher than anticipated equipment costs.
