Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department $1.3 Million Dollars Over Budget, Asking for Help From County Supervisors

Posted on Monday, June 2, 2014 12:44am

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department says it’s $1.3 million dollars over budget for the almost complete fiscal year, and is asking County Supervisors for financial help.

In a request scheduled for consideration by supervisors tomorrow, the department says it’s about $900,000 over budget in salaries, and benefits. In a memo to the board, the department says it’s taken longer than anticipated to get some new hires fully trained, and ready to work.

It also says there were major overages in overtime.  The county spent $85,000 more than anticipated to deal with large crowds in Isla Vista during Halloween, and $90,000 in unexpected overtime for the Isla Vista Deltopia event which turned into a riot.  The memo doesn’t include any overtime estimates from the Isla Vista rampage last month.

There was also overages in medical supplies, and new vehicles.
