San Luis Obispo County Health Department Rejects Report From Think Tank Questioning Nuclear Power Plant Safety

Posted on Monday, April 14, 2014 2:07pm

The San Luis Obispo County Health Department issued a report disputing findings of a study which claims the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power plant is causing serious health problems for some nearby residents.

A non-profit Santa Barbara think tank called the World Business Academy commissioned a study which contends there’s a higher incidence of childhood leukemia, adult cancers, and low birth weight babies among people living near the power plant.

County health officials say the report was based on flawed methodology, and the selective use of zip codes to gather data.

The health department says when the analysis was re-run to include excluded zip codes, the statistics were in line with averages for other area.

The State Cancer Registry was also asked by the county to review the World Business Academy, and found the numbers were distorted.

The registry says the adjusted cancer rates for the region remained the same, or actually declined.
