Hearing Set For Today On Controversial New Immigration And Customs Enforcement Facility Planned For Santa Maria

Posted on Thursday, March 27, 2014 12:01am

The controversy over whether a new Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility should be built in Santa Maria is the focus of a special meeting today.

The Santa Maria City Council will have the final say over whether the 12,700 square foot office complex should be built on the 700 block of West Century Street.

The issue is such a hot one, the council moved its meeting from the City Council chambers, to the Santa Maria Fairpark.  The meeting is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m..

Federal officials say the new facility will allow them to be able to centralize the processing of prisoners in local jails who should be deported.

Bu, many members of the community feel that the complex would lead to deportations of undocumented residents who aren’t criminals.

The Santa Maria Planning Commission approved the project, but multiple opponents appealed the decision, setting the stage for today’s hearing.
