Telephone Company Drops Controversial Proposal For Cell Phone Tower In City Of Ojai, Pursues Alternative Site

Posted on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 12:36am

A telephone company has withdrawn a controversial proposal to build a new cell phone tower in Ojai.

AT & T announced its dropping plans for the proposed 65 foot facility on the 1200 block of Grand Avenue.

The proposal created a firestorm of controversy, with residents upset about the idea of the tower in the area.

Many were also unhappy with the city’s handling of the proposal.

AT & T says will work with the city, Ventura County, and the public to try to find a more acceptable cell phone tower site.

City officials say the company is looking at a location several hundred feet north, or northeast of the original area, outside of the city limits, and in an area which would be camouflaged by trees.

As a result of the company withdrawing the permit, a special city planning commission hearing scheduled for today has been cancelled.
