Memorial Event Planned For Simi Valley Teen Who Died Trying To Rescue Parents From River

Posted on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 10:14am

A memorial will take place tonight for a Ventura County high school student who died trying to rescue his parents from a river in Yosemite National Park.

Walter Gonzales was on a family camping trip Sunday when his mother fell into the Merced River, and his father was sucked into an eddy trying to save her.

The 17 year old plunged in to try to help the two, but was pulled under by strong currents.

The Simi Valley teen’s parents were rescued.

Gonzales was a junior at Royal High School.

School is out for spring break, but family, and friends are gathering for a memorial ceremony at 7 tonight, on the school’s football field.
