Congresswoman Involved In Controversy Over Immigration And Customs Enforcement Facility Proposed For Central Coast

Posted on Thursday, March 20, 2014 3:19pm

A congresswoman who represents the Central Coast is now seeking a delay in federal government plans to relocate a controversial Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility to Santa Maria.

In a letter to the acting head of the agency, Democratic Congresswoman Lois Capps of Santa Barbara asked about what options the agency had explored for the site, and is seeking a delay in the plans until the community can review the plan further.

ICE says the facility will allow it to process criminals being released from jails in the region for possible deportation.   But, many residents fear it will lead to crackdowns on undocumented residents.

The Santa Maria Planning Commission approved the controversial project planned for the city, but opponents appealed the matter to the City Council, with a hearing now set for March 27th.
