Two Traffic Accidents Make Mess Out Of 101 Freeway In Santa Barbara County Overnight

Posted on Thursday, March 13, 2014 9:15am

It was a rough night for people using the 101 freeway in the Carpinteria area, with two major traffic accidents involving six vehicles leading to some lanes being closed until around 7 this morning.

The first accident happened just before 7:30 last night, when a southbound car crashed into a southbound big rig near the Santa Claus Lane exit.  The truck went out of control and overturned, spilling part of its load of strawberries.  The fast lanes on both sides of the freeway were closed by the accident, which left two people hurt.

Then, at about 9:45 p.m., there was a second crash in the area.  The CHP says a northbound car failed to see slowing in the Santa Monica Road area because of the first accident, and slammed into stopped vehicles, causing a four vehicle chain reaction accident.  The driver of the car which caused the second crash suffered moderate injuries, and no one else was hurt.

Crews worked through the night to remove the wreckage, and replace damaged guard rails.
