Search Turns Up Possible Evidence in Brutal Attack Of UCSB Student

Posted on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 6:32pm

A search turned up some possible evidence in the brutal beating, and gang rape of a UC Santa Barbara student.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue Team was deployed Tuesday afternoon to try to help detectives, and UCSB Police pinpoint where the early Sunday morning attack happened.  The 19 year old student was so dazed, she was unable to give many details about the attack.

The search started in Isla Vista, but Wednesday morning, searchers found an item on the UCSB campus which they think belonged to the attack’s victim, as well as items they think belonged to the suspects.  Investigators aren’t pinpointing the area, other than to say it’s a secluded area of the campus.  Because it’s on campus, UCSB Police are taking over from the Sheriff’s Department as the lead agency in the investigation.

UCSB police say in the wake of the incident, they have stepped up patrols.  The University is also installing some additional lighting on campus, as well as adding some new surveillance cameras.
