Medi-Cal provides counties some funding to provide help to the mentally ill. But, there are a number of non-reimbursable costs, like for homeless shelter services, and impatient services.
Santa Barbara County has been forced to dip into reserves to pull out $30 million dollars above budgeted costs over the last decade to help pay for these services.
KCLU’s Lance Orozco reports county officials say they are working on closing the gap, but this year, they’ll once again need to tap into the county’s piggy bank to pay all the bills.
