Some family members, and friends of people on board a jetliner which crashed off the Ventura County coastline more than a decade ago gathered today in Port Hueneme for a memorial event.
At 4:22 p.m. on January 31st, 2000 Alaska Air Flight 261 plunged into the ocean off of Anacapa Island, as it was flying from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to Seattle. All 88 people on board the plane died.
Federal investigators say that a screw in the plane’s tail assembly failed, leading to a loss of control of the aircraft, and the crash.
The ceremony took place at a memorial built on the beach in Port Hueneme.
