International Auto Racing Legend Andy Granatelli Dies In Santa Barbara

Posted on Monday, December 30, 2013 12:14am

An auto racing legend also known in recent years for his support of charities in Santa Barbara County has died.

Andy Granatelli died yesterday, from congestive heart failure.

He and his brothers got into auto racing, but he realized that his future was as a businessman, and race team owner.  Granatelli’s team, with driver Mario Andretti at the wheel, won the Indianapolis 500 in 1969.  He became the spokesman for STP oil, and gas treatment products, and later for Tune-up Masters.

Granatelli was elected to the National, and International Motorsports Halls of Fame.

The Montecito resident was involved in the community, helping to raise money for things like the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Council, and Santa Barbara’s Unity Shoppe.

Granatelli was 90 years old.
