Posted on Monday, December 16, 2013 1:33pm

The actor/writer/director who rose to fame in the 1970’s as a martial arts expert who took on the bad guys with his fists in the name of people who were mistreated has died in Ventura County.

Tom Laughlin was known to a generation of people as “Billy Jack.”

He made four “Billy Jack” movies, and was a pioneer in the filmmaking business because when he couldn’t get studio support, he rented theaters, and distributed the films himself.

The actor’s daughter told the Associated Press he died at Thousand Oaks hospital, as a result of pneumonia.  Laughlin was 82 years old.
