Posted on Friday, December 13, 2013 8:43am

Santa Barbara County planned new jail complex on the Central Coast just got the funding to become even bigger.

The County is in the process of building a 376 bed complex in Santa Maria to ease jail overcrowding.  The county had received an $80 million dollar state grant to pay for most of the projected $96 million dollar project.

Now comes word from Sacramento that the Board of State, and Community Corrections Executive Steering Committee has approved another grant for the county for an additional jail project, this one for $38.9 million dollars.  The new grant will allow the addition of another 278 beds to the original project.  It will include three housing units, and facilities intended to prepare inmates near the end of their jail time to be properly prepared for their reentry into society.  There were will be space for education programs, such as on-line courses.

This new addition will allow the closure of more of the outdated, and improvised jail facilities which are part of the main jail complex in Santa Barbara.  The county will have to come up with $3.9 million dollars, or ten percent in matching funds as a condition of the grant.
