Santa Barbara Couple Arrested After Infant Daughter Suffers Fractured Skull

Posted on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 11:28am

Police say they’ve arrested a Santa Barbara couple, after their 16 day old daughter was dropped, and then fallen on by the child’s father, causing a skull fracture.

Detectives say last Thursday night, Joshua Rodriguez had his daughter on his lap, when under the influence of drugs, and alcohol, he fell asleep on the sofa.  They say he tried to catch her as she fell onto the floor, but he then fell on her, with his left knee landing on his daughter’s head.

When Maria Rodriguez returned home about two hours later, she noticed her daughter was bruised, and by the middle of the night, saw that her head was deformed, and her right eye swollen shut.  But, the couple didn’t take the newborn to the hospital until 10 the next morning.  In addition to the fractured skull, the infant suffered brain injuries.

Both Joshua and Maria Rodriguez were arrested on child endangerment charges, and the infant is now in the custody of Santa Barbara County Child Welfare Services.
