Santa Barbara County Formalizes Opposition To New Chumash Reservation Proposal

Posted on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 6:40am

Santa Barbara County has solidified its opposition to efforts by the Chumash tribe to create a new, 1400 acre reservation in the Santa Ynez Valley.

The tribe says it wants to build some homes, and perhaps a museum, and tribal headquarters on the property.  Neighbors worry it could become the site for a new mega casino.

The tribe is now trying to get federal designation of the land as reservation property.

KCLU’s Lance Orozco reports hundreds of people were on hand for a County Board of Supervisors meeting in which the board outlined the strategy it will take with the federal government in opposing the proposal.
