Caltrans To Use New Seal On Bumpy Section Of State Highway On Central Coast

Posted on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 3:27pm

An experiment to come up with a paving material which provides a good surface for motorists, and bicyclists has worked well enough it’s now being used on a now bumpy section of state highway on the Central Coast.

Caltrans, and the UC Davis Pavement Research Center have been testing a sand seal in Monterey County.

After getting feedback that it provided a smoother seal than other materials, work is beginning to use the material on Highway 1 from Cambria, to the San Luis Obispo/Monterey County line.

A chip seal was used on the section of highway last year, and it created a jarring, bumpy ride which upset bicyclists and motorists.
