A Santa Barbara County man is facing multiple charges, after police say he stabbed his former wife’s new boyfriend in the chest with a metal tipped bamboo spear.

Santa Barbara Police say the victim had gone to a home on the 600 block of San Pasqual Street just before 8 a.m. yesterday, to pick up a co-worker.  He was confronted by Jose Juan Bernal, who had followed the 35 year old Santa Barbara man to the house.  Investigators say Bernal confronted the victim, stabbing him with a bamboo spear which had a three inch piece of metal attached to the end of it.

The victim was able to block Bernal’s car, and police arrested the 36 year old Isla Vista man as he was attempting to flee on foot.  Police searching his car found an improvised fire bomb inside, which was safely dismantled by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad.

The victim escaped with minor injuries.
