A big rig accident on the 101 Freeway in Montecito made a mess out of traffic today.
A piece of debris on the freeway hit, and punctured an external fuel tank on a northbound big rig. It spilled 20 to 40 gallons of fuel on the freeway. No one was hurt, but the accident prompted the shutdown of all northbound lanes at San Ysidro Road just after 11 a.m., for about two hours.
Traffic was routed on surface streets through Montecito, creating a backup which extended for miles. Crews were able to reopen one lane of the northbound 101 just after 1 p.m. The CHP reported that just after 2;30, the freeway was completely open.
