Posted on Friday, September 6, 2013 12:16am

A former police department business office supervisor in Santa Barbara County has been sentenced to ten years in prison, for stealing more than $600,000.

Karen Flores oversaw all functions of the Santa Barbara Police Department’s business office, including parking citation revenue.

The 48 year old woman pled guilty to misappropriation of public funds, and five counts of filing false tax returns.

Prosecutors say they determined she stole from the department during a five year long period.

In addition to the 10 year sentence, she was ordered to pay back the city nearly $610,000 in restitution, and $75,000 to cover the cost of an extensive audit.

Flores also has to pay the Franchise Tax Board $112,000 for unreported taxes.
