A South Coast community is issuing a community crime alert about a sharp spike in storage locker burglaries.
Ventura Police say the number of the storage facility crimes has gone up 181% during the first eight months of the year.
The number of incident from January 1st, to August 15th of this year went from 26 in 2012, to 73 this year. 41 of the crimes were break-ins, but 31 happened because the storage facilities had been left unsecured.
Police are urging people with items in storage units to insure they are protected with a high quality lock, to check to see the facility is adequately monitored, and that owners have a comprehensive list of what’s being stored in case a burglary happens.
