Santa Barbara County Rejects Request For Talks With Chumash Tribe; Tribe Says It Will Pursue Annexation Of Property By Federal Government To Reservation

Posted on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 12:55am

A controversy over plans by the Chumash tribe to expand its reservation land in the Santa Ynez Valley has exploded.

The tribe sought high level negotiations with the county over the nearly 1400 acres of property, but County Supervisors rejected that proposal.

Now, Chumash officials say they will pursue federal approval to annex the land.  If approved, it means the county won’t have a say over its development, and won’t get property tax revenue.
