Two Arrested For Hate Crime Attack In Santa Barbara

Posted on Friday, August 16, 2013 12:41pm

Santa Barbara Police say they’ve arrested two gang members for a hate crime attack, in which a man was hit in the head with a hammer in a city park, and seriously injured.

A seven week investigation led to the arrest of David Roberto Ybarra, and a 17 year old boy for the June 22nd attack in Ortega Park.

Detectives say the two gang members, along with another person approached the 40 year old victim as he was playing cards with a group of friends.  They say the three told the group they were not welcome in the park because of their Mexican nationality.  Investigators say Ybarra then pulled a hammer from his clothing, and hit the victim in the temple.  The gang members then fled.

The victim spent a week in the hospital for the head injury.

Police say the 19 year old man will face attempted murder, and hate crime charges, along with other counts, and that prosecutors want to try the 17 year old as an adult.
