State Coastal Commission Being Asked To Investigation Allegations Of Fracking In Santa Barbara Channel

Posted on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 7:39pm

The State Coastal Commission is being asked to investigate allegations of offshore fracking involving at least a dozen wells in the Santa Barbara Channel.

The Environmental Defense Center, the Center for Biological Diversity, and the Surfrider Foundation are calling for the Commission to look into the situation.

Officials with the environmental groups say the process poses a threat to the region’s marine environment, and claim those who are supposed to be regulating the oil and gas industry are unaware of where, and when it’s happened.

The state currently doesn’t regulate offshore, or onshore fracking, although it has been in the process of developing some proposed regulations.

Fracking is a process involving the high pressure injection of water, and chemicals into the earth to try to open passageways to oil, and gas deposits.
