Central Coast City Council To Tackle Controversy Over Proposed New Department Store

Posted on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 5:27pm

The controversy over a proposed new department store on the Central Coast could be settled tonight.

The Santa Maria City Council is expected to make a decision on whether a new Fallas store should be allowed at the site of a long shuttered Mervyn’s in Town Center West.

The Santa Maria Planning Commission approved the proposal, but the City Council has been torn over the issue, with some members on record as saying the proposed store isn’t upscale enough for an area they are trying to reinvigorate.

The City Council meeting starts at 6:30 tonight.
