Vandenberg Air Force Base To Look At Allowing New Oil And Gas Drilling

Posted on Friday, July 19, 2013 10:13am

Could new oil, and gas drilling be coming off the Central Coast?

The U.S. Air Force says it’s in the preliminary stages of looking at the idea of new drilling to reach deposits off the coast of Vandenberg Air Force.

There are currently five drilling operations on base property.

The proposal isn’t calling for new offshore oil platforms.

It would use slant drilling from onshore sites to reach the offshore deposits.

Air Force officials say they plan to meet with local officials about the idea.

They say new drilling would also have to be something which doesn’t interfere with the base’s military and space missions.

The Air Force is looking at what it calls an opportunity assessment to see if the idea is even viable.
