Controversial Plans For New South Coast Fire Station On Hold

Posted on Friday, July 19, 2013 1:01pm

Controversial plans for a new fire station on the South Coast are now on hold.

The Montecito Fire Protection District’s Board of Directors took its proposal for a new facility near the 2500 block of East Valley Road off the table.

The District certified the environmental impact report for the project, but some nearby property owners objected to the plans.

The Montecito Agricultural Foundation, which owns the land across the street sued.   It questioned the adequacy of the EIR, and a judge agreed.

The board now has to decide what to do next, with options ranging from fixing, or doing a new EIR, to looking for a new site.

The board is set to meet on Monday to look at the situation.

The fire department says the new station is critical to improving emergency response times in that area of Montecito.
