The City of Ventura has received a state grant which will help it pay off the final bill for the purchase of land for a new Westside park.
The California Department of Parks and Recreation Land and Water Conservation Fund awarded the city $350,000 towards the purchase of the property at Kellogg Street, and North Ventura Avenue.
Because the City of Ventura didn’t have the upfront money to buy the 2.4 acres of land, The Trust For Public Land purchased the property. The City then bought some of the land from the trust immediately, and leased the remainder while it tried to raise the rest of the money.
With the purchase of the land now complete, the focus is now on trying to get more grants to actually design, and build the long sought new park. A committee called the Kellogg Park Working Group is also meeting regularly, to work on planning and fundraising efforts, as well as to come up with ideas on how to make the parkland usable on an interim basis.
