Investigative Journalism Project In Santa Barbara Looks At Long Local History Of Clergy Abuse

Posted on Monday, July 15, 2013 3:45pm

It’s a dark part of Santa Barbara’s legacy you won’t find on any Chamber of Commerce website.

For decades, boys at what was St. Anthony’s Seminary, as well as the nearby Santa Barbara Mission were molested by members of the clergy.

The friars eventually settled with 25 of the local plaintiffs, but the actual number of victims is believed to be many times higher.

No one knows the exact number, because many victims never reported what occurred to them.

The new investigative journalism project “Mission & State” has produced an in-depth multimedia overview of the massive scandal.

The story, along with photos and video pieces are on the non-profit journalism organization’s website, MissionandState.org

“Mission & State’s” Sam Slovick wrote the story, called “Sacred Monsters:”
