Permit For Homeless To Park RV Overnights At Goleta Church Upheld

Posted on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 11:49am

A Goleta church will continue to provide a place for the homeless to park their vehicles, and sleep overnight, despite the opposition of some nearby residents.

The Goleta Planning Commission last night heard an appeal of the Cambridge Drive Community Church permit.

The permit allows one RV to use the church’s parking lot from 7 a.m. to

7 p.m, as part of a concept spearheaded by Santa Barbara’s New Beginnings Counseling Center

Some neighborhood residents were worried about having homeless in effect living in their community, and brought up issues ranging from safety, to impacts on property values.

Supporters say area shelters are full, and point out another Goleta church has participated in the program for years without problems.

The Goleta Planning Commission voted 2-2 on the appeal, which in effect meant the early decision granting the permit stands.
