Santa Barbara County Offered State Grant To Help With TB Control

Posted on Monday, July 8, 2013 12:51am

Santa Barbara County has been offered a state grant grant to help control tuberculosis in the county.

Public Health Department officials say there are currently 21 active TB cases in the county.  The $21,000 grant will help health officials keep the cases in check, and the disease from spreading.  For each TB case encountered, medical workers say they end up screening an additional 15-20 people to insure they haven’t contracted the disease.

TB is a contagious disease spread by airborne particles when a person with it coughs, sneezes, or even speaks.  Anyone inhaling the particles can be infected.  Santa Barbara County Supervisors are expected to accept the grant from the California Department of Public Health when the supervisors meet in Santa Maria tomorrow.
