Stolen Van Equipped To Steal Fuel Causes Dangerous Leak In Ventura County

Posted on Monday, June 24, 2013 9:45am

Firefighters arriving to deal with what was reported to be a fuel leak from a van in Ventura found themselves dealing with a stolen vehicle outfitted with a huge tank apparently used to steal fuel.

It happened at around 8 last night, in a Ventura neighborhood south of Highway 126 near Saratoga Avenue.  Firefighters used absorbent material to keep the leaking fuel from running into a storm drain.  They then discovered the fuel wasn’t leaking from the van’s mechanical area, but was instead coming from the cargo area.

They found a 500 gallon tank in the back of the van, along with a pump, and hoses.  The leak couldn’t be controlled, so a hazardous material truck had to be brought in to remove the fuel.

No arrests have been made, but Ventura Police are investigating the situation.
