South Coast Legislator Proposes Law To Prevent Car Dealers From Selling Used Vehicles Facing Safety Recalls Unless Repaired

Posted on Thursday, May 30, 2013 11:53am

The State Senate passed a bill by a South Coast legislator which would ban the resale of used vehicles under safety recalls.
Senate Bill 686 is being called the first proposal of its kind in the nation.

The legislation authored by Democratic State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson of Santa Barbara would ban car dealers, and rental car companies from selling used vehicles under a federal safety recall until they are repaired.

Federal law currently restricts dealers from selling new vehicles under safety recalls, but doesn’t cover used vehicles.

The bill now goes to the State Assembly for consideration.

It the legislation becomes law, it wouldn’t take effect until a federal data base of safety recall information being developed is online.
