Ventura County Economist Tells California Leaders State Needs To Keep Taxes Competitive, Open Doors To Immigrants To Revitalize State

An economist from Ventura County told state leaders that keeping taxes competitive, and federal passage of immigration reform are two key steps critical to revitalizing California.

Dr. Bill Watkins spoke at a session of the California State Senate yesterday, saying the state doesn’t have to beat Texas, and other states when it comes to business taxes. He says it just needs to be in the same ballpark.

Watkins believes opening the door to immigration is vital, because he believes it provides a low cost, highly motivated labor pool willing to take on entry level jobs which are often hard to fill.

Watkins is the Executive Director of the California Lutheran University Center for Economic Research, and Forecasting.
