Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department Issues Update On Conditional Release Of Sexually Violent Predator

Posted on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 3:18pm

A man labeled as a sexual violent predator by authorities who has been conditionally released in Santa Barbara County has registered with the Sheriff’s Department, and is now living in the county.

Tibor Karsai has been behind bars for three decades for a series of sexual assaults. He was first convicted in Santa Barbara County in the 1970’s, but was most recently convicted of charges in Placer County.

A Placer County judge ordered Karsai released in Santa Barbara County. The Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s office fought the move for 20 months, taking the case all the way to the State Supreme Court before losing.

Because the state couldn’t find an adequate place to house the now 60 year old man, he’s living in a remote area of Northern Santa Barbara County in an RV with a 24 hour a day guard, and a GPS tracking system on his ankle.

This morning, the Sheriff’s Department released word that Karsai had checked in as required, and a photo of him was taken for release to the public under Meghan’s Law.
