An investigation is underway into the death of a man who died while in the custody of law enforcement officers in Santa Barbara County.
Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department officials say on March 23rd, Lawrence James Baumann was taken into custody by City of Santa Barbara Police officers following a disturbance in Alameda Park. The Sheriff’s Department says the 51 year old Santa Barbara man was arrested for battery, and resisting a police officer, and that it took several officers to take him into custody.
Officials say as Baumann was being booked into the County Jail, he stopped breathing. Staff members immediately started proving emergency care, and he was taken to a hospital. He died March 27th, after being taken off of life support.
Autopsy results are still pending. Authorities say they aren’t releasing any additional information until an investigation is complete.
