Santa Barbara City College is one of two national winners of a prize for community college excellence, and will receive $400,000.

The local college is sharing the 2013 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence with Walla Walla Community College, in Washington state.

The Aspen Prize is awarded annually to community colleges which show excellence in areas like student degree completion, success of graduates in getting jobs, helping to improve the success rate of low income, and minority students, and improving the rate of student learning. The prize is funded by a coalition of foundations, with the winners chosen by a panel of national leaders.

The $400,000 each of the community colleges received is intended to support their programs. In selecting Santa Barbara City College, the panel noted that its graduation, and transfer rate to four year colleges is more than 20% higher than the national average.
