Work Set To Get Underway On Major New Housing And Commercial Development Next To 101 Freeway In Ventura County

Posted on Thursday, March 14, 2013 12:02am

Work is finally set to begin next week on a 63 acre housing and commercial development next to the 101 Freeway in Ventura County.

What’s being called Wagon Wheel Village will be built in the area of the old Wagon Wheel Motel, restaurant, and bowling alley at the intersection of the 101 Freeway and Highway 1, in Oxnard. The project is being built by Lucas Oil Projects, and Oakwood Communities, and plans call for 1500 housing units, 50,000 square feet of commercial space, and seven acres of parks.

The project drew some opposition because of the historic roadside architecture in the area, but because it had become run down, and blighted, a judge eventually cleared the way for the project. The developers and city officials are expected to take part in a groundbreaking ceremony next week.
