Research Team Which Includes Scientist in Santa Barbara Suggests New Approach To Dealing With Exploding Global Plastics Pollution Problem

Posted on Thursday, March 14, 2013 9:02am

A research team which includes a Santa Barbara scientist has come up with frightening statistics about the growing problem of plastic waste.

The researchers say unless we do something about it…we’ll have 33 billion tons of plastics on our land, and oceans by 2050.
But, they say leaders haven’t shown the political will to tackle the problem.

The scientists suggest a unique solution: Because many of the plastics are toxic, classify them as such, so government agencies can use their enforcement powers to deal with the issue.

KCLU’s Lance Orozco has the story.
