Local Assemblyman Introduces Bill To Give Students More Clout In Community College Districts

Posted on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 10:52am

A state assemblyman from Santa Barbara, and Ventura Counties has introduced legislation to try to give students more clout in California’s community college districts.

Democratic Assemblyman Das Williams of Santa Barbara introduced AB 447, which would expand the roles of students who are members of district boards of trustees. Under his proposal, the student trustees would be able to make motions and seconds, and cast advisory votes. They would also be able to attend some closed sessions, although they would still be restricted from those dealing with litigation, personnel issues, and collective bargaining.

Williams says with districts facing issues like funding cuts, and rising fees, it’s more important than ever that the students be in a position to have a say in board actions.
