Ventura Man Convicted Of Stealing Historic Relics From Ventura Mission

Posted on Friday, February 15, 2013 11:50am

A Ventura man has been convicted of stealing nine historic relics from the San Buevaventura Mission.

Police say Edward Burgess broke into the mission last October, and stole the items from a rectory. They included some items which included the actual chips of bones of saints.

An attorney for the 26 year old man conceded Burgess stole the items, but contended he was guilty of second degree burglary. Prosecutors contended the items were taken from the rector, where two priests lived, making it a residential burglary with a harsher sentence.

A jury agreed, and now Burgess is facing up to six years in prison when he’s sentenced. He’s still facing additional charges from some other thefts.
